From the sublime to the ridiculous, they’re all record breakers. 
These are just some of the new entries in the Guinness Book Of World Records 2011, including Swallow the smallest cow - who stands at just 33.5 inches tall - and a man who can fit 400 drinking straws in his mouth and keep them there for ten seconds.
One of the oddest has to be Stephen Parkes, a media technician from Nottingham, 44, who has the Largest Collection Of Smurf Memorabilia at 1,061 figures. 
Amarilis Espinoza, of Guinness World Records, said: ‘It is very difficult to get into the book and about 80 per cent of entries get rejected.’
Longest Tongue On A Dog: Puggy, Becky Stanford’s male Pekingese, is nine years old. Its mouth-watering 4.5in tongue was officially measured at a Texan animal clinic last May.

BUSINESS PLAN COMPETITION                     
Tanzania Private Sector Foundation (TPSF) has been designated as the implementing agency for a Matching Grants Programme which is funded by the Government of Tanzania with support from the World Bank.The programme comprises two separate sub-projects
  • TBDS-Tanzania Business Development Scheme
  • TIAS-Technical Innovation and Applied Research Scheme
This year Tanzania Private sector Foundation under its program of Business Development Scheme with Collaboration of Dobea community brings to you Business Plan competition!!!

Who can participate?
Criteria for participation
You can participate in the Business Plan Competition if:
·        You are a national of the United Republic of Tanzania and you live/work on the mainland, Zanzibar or Pemba.
·        You apply as an individual.
·        You are 18 years or older.
·        Your business concept or idea is potentially viable and legal and concerns the expansion of an existing business or the start-up of a new business based in Tanzania.
·        You have a registered for-profit business or you plan to register a for-profit business.
·        You have a privately-owned business. If your business is a joint venture, it has majority ownership by Tanzanians.
·        Your business idea is in one of the following sectors: agriculture and processing, manufacturing, tourism or services (see examples below).
You cannot participate in the Business Plan Competition if:
·        You are a judge, trainer, consultant or employee of the Business Development Gateway or one of the partner organisations.
·        Those who won prizes in the past Business Plan Competitions in Tanzania (including BDG Cycle 1 BPC, 2007 Bid Challenge BPC, 2007 & 2008 UDEC and TechnoServe competitions) are NOT eligible to participate. However, entrepreneurs who participated without winning may apply. Winners of Cycle 1 Business Diagnostic Program (BDP) are encouraged to apply.
·        You want to take part as a company or other entity (only individuals can participate).
·        Your business is partially or fully owned or has entities that are controlled or operated by the Government of Tanzania.
·        You have a non-profit business.
·        Your business or business idea is in a non-growth sector, including trade, subsistence farming, animal husbandry, trade in non-processed farm products, tourism brokerage, guesthouse management, or services with no value addition like counseling, marketing and consultancy.
·        Your business is in the production of weapons, alcoholic beverages, tobacco or gambling.

Rules
Application
·        The application consists of an Application Form, a Business Concept and a Letter of Agreement. These have to be filled-in and submitted to the Business Plan Competition, physically through a regional SIDO / ZNCCIA / ZIFA office (find your local office here) or on-line through this Business Development Gateway website.
·        Applications for the Business Plan Competition 2010-2011 must be submitted between the 12th of October and the 13th of November 2010. Late applications shall not be considered.
·        A participant can only present one Business Concept in the Business Plan Competition 2010 - 2011.
·        The applicants must follow the Guidelines of the Business Plan Competition. Hard copies of the Guidelines are included in the Participants Information Packs available at SIDO offices as well as at Dobea Community Ltd located at University of Dar es salaam Entrepreneurship Centre(UDEC), Room:B210.
·        After a Business Concept is submitted, it will be considered as final and cannot be changed.
·        The Business Concept or idea must be the original work of the participant.
·        The Business Concept should be between 2 and 3 pages long.
·        The Business Concept must be typed in Microsoft Word in Times New Roman, font size 12. Handwritten applications will not be considered.
·        Application fees: No application fee is payable while filling out application forms. However, when one is selected and is invited to the 1 day BPC training, a registration fee of Tshs. 10,000/- shall be paid during the training workshops to the implementing partner (SIDO/ ZNCCIA/ ZIFA) and a receipt MUST be issued.
·        Only individuals can participate.
·        Participants must agree with the rules of the competition and sign a Participation Letter of Agreement when participating in the first training session of the Business Plan Competition.
·        Participants that are selected to take part in the Business Plan Competition must be present at the training venues in person to attend training and present their plans.


Awards
·        Participants must have or be ready to open a bank account in order to receive the award money. On the mainland of Tanzanian this must be an account with NMB; on Zanzibar it must be an account with the Peoples' Bank of Zanzibar.
·        Competition prizes are non-transferable, non-routable and non-extendable.
·        Prizes are subject to the laws of Tanzania, including tax regulations.
·        Grants are supposed to be utilized in business only. Those who receive grants are supposed to utilize them in their businesses within three months from the time they received the grants.
·        Grant usage must be in line with Grant usage plans declared by participants in the Grant Usage Forms. Winners must show to BDG Office, receipts and documentation indicating usage.

Confidentiality
·        The judges, sponsors, organizers and business mentors involved in the Business Plan Competition will treat all business ideas and plans with the strictest confidentiality. However, protection of intellectual property is the ultimate responsibility of the participants.
·        All entries in the Business Plan Competition remain the property of the applicants.
·        Registration details and personal data of participants will be available for statistical and promotional purposes.
Language
·        All components of the Business Plan Competition are in English, including written presentation of business ideas and plans and oral presentations at the Finals of the competition. However, trainers shall use both English and Kiswahili during training.

Judging

The judging process of the Business Plan Competition is as objective and transparent as possible. To avoid bias, each application/business concept/business plan is reviewed by at least two judges. All judges have a track record in financial services, business development or business service delivery. The judges have attended a training session which was specifically developed for the Business Plan Competition. They have signed an agreement of confidentiality

Competition Phases

The Business Plan Competition consists of a number of phases:

Phase 1: Application and screening

Applicants will send applications forms and their business ideas/ concepts to BDG Offices/ partner organizations (SIDO/ ZNCCIA/ ZIFA) in the regions. Online applications will be by visiting clicking ‘online NBPC application’ at BDG website at http://www.bdgtpsf.com/ / http://www.tpsftz.org/ Applications submitted by email must be sent to the Email:dobea.community@gmail.com
All applications must be received from 12th October 2010 to 13th November 2010. Deadline for receiving applications will be  13th November 2010. See contacts list of regional offices where NBPC application forms will be sent.
Business ideas will be assessed and screened based on clear eligibility criteria.

Phase 2: One day Entrepreneurship and Business Plan Training Seminar

Eligible/ selected applicants will be invited to attend a one day Business Plan training seminar to be held at regional centers. This seminar will be held on 20th January 2011.
The seminar provides participants the opportunity to refine their business concepts. Participants will further develop their business concepts to a 5-6 page business plan summary before submitting to a panel of judges for evaluation.
The business summaries will be evaluated and financial grants awarded to 300 selected participants, to assist them in further developing their business plan.

Phase 3: Business Plan development through a three day Business Plan Training seminar

From 17th- 19th March 2011, the top 300 participants’ country wide will be invited to a three (3) days business development training to bed held at the regional training centers.
Training at this phase will include detailed business plan training (financial, marketing, staffing, production, business management components etc) to enable the participants further develop their business summaries into 15-20 pages business plans. The 15- 20 pages business plans must be submitted to BDG by 2nd April 2011 for evaluation.
The 300 business plans will be evaluated and judged by a panel of independent and qualified judges and the best 60 will be selected, to proceed with phase 4. Financial grants shall be awarded to the 60 participants to enable them invest to support their business ideas.

Phase 4: Strengthening the business plan through further training and mentorship

From 10th- 14th May 2011, the selected, 60 entrepreneurs will be invited to a five (5) day intensive business planning, management training and mentorship seminar. Before attending the training/ seminar, each participant will receive feedback from Judges to enable them write their final business plan. The 60 participants will be expected to submit their final business plans on 10th May 2011 as they attend the seminar.
The 60 entrepreneurs shall be assigned time to make an oral presentation of their final business plans to a panel of high value Judges. This will take place between 17th - 21st May 2011.
The panel of judges will listen to all presentations, review the business plans, score and select 15 winners, who will be awarded large grants. The winners at this stage and previous stage will be invited to attend the final ceremony.

Judging process

At each phase, the judging process shall be centralized and shall be carried out by carefully selected independent Judges.
Judging will be fair, objective and transparent. Judges will include established and experienced business consultants, bankers, established entrepreneurs, university lecturers, business development professionals who are well versed with business management and business planning.
All Judges shall be required to attend an orientation session, and shall sign confidentiality agreements. At each stage, each business plan/ concept shall be evaluated by at least 2 judges, to avoid bias.
All decisions related to evaluations shall be final; the scoring shall however be available for review by an independent panel. There are no opportunities for participants to appeal.

Aftercare

All entrepreneurs that reach the Finals of BPC can expect continued support from mentors who will give access to relevant information, create links with financial institutions and relevant business service providers and business associations.
All 300 winners of Phase 2 will be invited to a alumni event of BPC which will give them the opportunity to meet like-minded entrepreneurs, exchange experiences and create an extensive network in the Tanzanian business community



Awards and price money
During the different phases of the Business Plan Competition, a number of awards and prices will be made available:
·        600 Entrepreneurs with the most viable Business Concepts will be invited to a one-day training session to improve their business knowledge and skills.
·        In the second phase 300 entrepreneurs with the best Business Concepts will receive a grant of Tshs 3,000,000/- and will be invited to a three-day business plan training.
·        The entrepreneurs with the top 60 best Business Plans in phase 3 will receive a grant of Tshs 9,000,000/-. They will also be invited for a five-day intensive training and personal coaching seminar.
·        The finalists of the Business Plan Competition 2010 - 2011 will receive large grants:
·        One (1) Overall winner - Tshs 20,000,000/-
·        First place – Tshs 18,000,000/-
·        Second place – Tshs 17,000,000/-
·        Third place – Tshs 16,000,000/-
·        Most innovative – Tshs 15,000,000/-
·        Best in Agri-business – Tshs 13,000,000/-
·        Best in Tourism – Tshs 13,000,000/-
·        Best in services – Tshs 13,000,000/-
·        Best female entrepreneur – Tshs 13,000,000/-
·        Best youth entrepreneur – Tshs 13,000,000/-
·        Best in Manufacturing – Tshs 13,000,000/-
·        Best in Mining – Tshs 13,000,000/-
·        Best in Energy sector – Tshs 13,000,000/-
·        Best in Environment conservation – Tshs 13,000,000/-
·        Best in Startup business idea – Tshs 13,000,000/-
Eligible participants will be required to open a business bank account with National Microfinance Bank (NMB) OR People’s Bank of Zanzibar (PBZ) to receive the grant fund.
NOTE: Each winner is eligible to not more than one award at the final stage.
